The search for wardrobe staples that are both practical and polished shows no sign of slowing down. Trainers, once confined to the gym, are now a much-loved luxury. Silk scarves remain a spring wardrobe essential, as effortlessly chic as they are versatile. And when it comes to outerwear, the options for fashion-meets-function are endless. Though barn jackets were a stand-out spring jacket style last season, they continue to be a capsule wardrobe staple, valued for both for its timeless appeal and functionality.

Also known as a chore jacket, for reasons that will soon become clear, the barn jacket has its origins in 19th-century France, where outdoor workers depended on it for warmth and practicality, storing tools in its convenient pockets. Today, the style has been reinterpreted by some of fashion’s most prominent names, from Jonathan Anderson to Prada, Fendi and Miu Miu.

Unsurprisingly, it has also become a street style favourite. Its rugged charm pairs effortlessly with everything from leather trousers and rugby shirts to jeans and flats, hitting the perfect high-low balance we all aspire to achieve.
